Blunder #1 – Not Creating a Finalized Schedule
While this has nothing to do with the actual skill of photography, it’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make that will prove disastrous to the end product. Make sure that you speak with your clients prior to the wedding day to create an official photography schedule. As you know, there are certain times during the day that are simply more photogenic than others. Create an official schedule and stick to it.
Blunder #2 – Not Communicating With Clients
One of the most important steps you should take when it comes to creating the most outstanding wedding photographs is clearly communicating with clients to uncover how they wish to be revealed in their photographs. A great way to accomplish this goal is asking your client to send you a photograph of what they want and an opposite photograph of what they don’t. This gives you a clear indication of how to effective photograph your subjects.
Blunder #3 – Working Solo
There’s a lot of activity within a wedding – especially during the reception. You should always bring along a secondary photographer during the event. Secondary photographers offer a unique point of view and can offer some really beautiful candid shots of the wedding party and their guests.

The best wedding photographs are those that have a beautiful mixture of candidness and formality. Avoid excessive control over your subjects poses. This is a sure-fire way to make photographs look unnatural, and at worst, uncomfortable. Allow your subjects to be themselves, your images will reflect their personality in a beautiful way.
Blunder #5 – Too Much Eye Contact
Instruct your clients to avoid looking at the camera during candid shots, and even in certain formal shots. A big problem many clients have is wanting to look directly at the camera during all of their photographs. Instruct your clients to simply be natural. You’ll let them know when they need to look at the camera. Otherwise, have them pretend you aren’t there for the best journalistic and candid shots.

Never place your camera inside of your clothing to warm it up. This can cause they lens to fog and create a bad photo. Make sure that your camera is ready for the cold temperatures by adapting it to near colder elements. For example, leave it out in the coolest part of your home or office before you decide to use it to take winter photos. In fact, the moisture and cold can be fatal to your camera and your photos.
Always keep your batteries warm. Remember that batteries run out in collar temperatures. Therefore, the night before make sure your batteries are stored in a warm area (not to exceed normal room temperature). It would be a shame to capture that great wedding moment and then your batteries go dead.
